A fire mock drill conducted by the police home guard staff at the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office here on Friday was nothing less than a mockery.
Those from the home guard department had already been informed about the drill and the entire parking had conveniently been cleared. Ambulances were also parked outside the office, putting a question mark on conducting such drills which are otherwise meant to check people’s reaction time and see how long it takes for help to arrive. All arrangements were put in place well before time, making the exercise useless.
It took more than 13 minutes for one of the participants to get a person posing as a victim down the second floor using ropes. Many gaps came to fore as those performing the drill did not even cordon off the area which is mandatory in such incidents.
Laik Ram Dabas, commandant of General Home Guards and Civil Defence director, was present at the occasion. Though, dejected with the drill, he said this was a traditional department and efforts were being made to make it better.
He added that, soon, 7,500 women home guards would be recruited across Haryana. Home guard lines would be set up in six districts, out of which Panchkula would be one, he said.
