Police officials checking documents of a suspicious car at police check posts is a passé, for the Panchkula police personnel have been armed with tabs, along with an internet facility, loaded with National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.
With this facility, it will be easier for the police to find out if a car is a stolen property.
"Vehicles get stolen and are then used by criminals to commit crime. Such cars get caught only in case of secret information at check posts. In most cases, police just check for the registration certificates (RCs), and then allow the car to leave. However, many times, RCs get tampered too," said an official.
By equipping police personnel with tabs having NCRB data, they will easily be able to find out if the car is stolen, as FIRs registered in the state will get updated in the data.
Earlier, whenever a suspicious car was apprehended, cops on check posts informed the concerned police station, who then checked NCRB data. However, under this project, cars and other vehicles can be checked on the spot.
In Panchkula, cops keep a close check on Etios, Zen, and Verna as these cars have been used in numerous loot incidents in the district in the recent years.
Talking to HT, commissioner of police (CP), Ambala-Panchkula, Ajay Singhal, said, "The trials are going on. We checked the system on Tuesday at a parking in Sector 9, and at another parking in Sector 11 on Wednesday. Director general of police, Haryana, has given special funds for the project. If it is successful, it will be launched in the entire state of Haryana. Tablets are easy to handle, easy to charge, and a SIM card can also be used in them easily."
