A protest was staged in the Sector-16 market by the market association members demanding better roads in the sector here on Thursday.

The members also protested against the bad lighting of the roads and raised slogans against the Panchkula municipal corporation and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

The shop owners said there had been no development in the market since the past 25 years and they have been demanding better roads and infrastructure for many years now.

Coordination committee chairperson Ranjeeta Mehta said, "The roads are bad and there have been numerous instances when senior citizens have hurt themselves due to uneven and bad roads. The approach road is a disaster and the sanitation in the market is worse".

The members complained that they had taken up the demand to improve the sewerage and sanitation conditions several times, but to no avail.

"During monsoons, sewerage gets blocked and sanitation system is bad throughout the year. Also, the vacant land in the market should be put to use and a community centre should be built on the same," members said.

Meanwhile, the market has about 40 shops which haven't been let out or sold by HUDA. Members said officials should either sell them or let them off.

Another long-standing issue bothering the market association members is the clutter left by the sabzi mandi every Tuesday. "No one cleans up the following day. We have to wait for the stray cattle to clear up the mess and they themselves are enough nuisance already," rued members.
