A group clash over old enmity between two Dalit communities ended in a death and injuries to 8-10 people at Gate Number 3 of Kharakmangoli village in Panchkula on Monday night. "Earlier, we had registered a case for attempt to murder but after a death we added section 302 (for murder) of the Indian penal Code," informed inspector Mukesh Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Sector 5.

The clash between the two groups took place over occupancy of a particular path. One group used swords and bricks on the other. Rajbir, Deepti, Upesh and his grandmother Vidyawati and at least seven other people got injured. When the police reached there, stone-pelting was going on.

Rajbir and Deepti were critical and were referred to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). Rajbir, 28, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. As soon as the news about his death spread, panic gripped Kharakmangoli. About 20 police personnel were deployed in the village.

The police arrested Jona, Bunty, Lakshman, Khali, Padam, Rishi, Sahib Manga, Raj Kumar and Makhan for the murder. "They will be produced before the court on Wednesday," said the SHO.

Besides, murder and attempt to murder, sections of rioting and attacking with sharp-edged weapon have also been included in the first-information report (FIR). "We are investigating the case. There have been past incidents of clashes between these two communities," said deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Panchkula, Ashwin Shenvi.
