The Punjab government has launched a special drive to select panchayats for the national awards.
The panchayats that have done excellent work for the overall development of villages will be shortlisted for recommending their names for the awards.
Rural development and panchayat minister Surjit Singh Rakhra announced this here on Tuesday.
To shortlist the panchayats, a special criterion has been devised which will evaluate the various performance parameters of the panchayats, such as infrastructure development, social activities and better management and use of panchayat funds.
He said the rural development and panchayats department had asked all panchayats to fill the specified questionnaire mentioning their achievements so that their case could be forwarded to the Centre for the awards.
He said the panchayat empowerment award would be given for the year 2013-14.
