The local police traced parents of the six-day-old baby girl that was found abandoned at Mansa Devi Temple here on Saturday.
Rakesh and Kiran, residents of Ramdarbar, in their complaint to the police, had said their daughter was missing. They told the police that they had handed over their daughter to someone while they were standing in a queue at General Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, on Saturday. They said the unidentified person fled away with their daughter.
The police already had a suspicion as the parents did not show any registration card of the hospital. Also, the place where they said they had handed over the baby was a gynaecology ward, though they were claiming that they had gone to take her (baby) for a check-up.
The police then took them to General Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, to identify the baby, but to no avail.
The police after checking the call details of the parents found that the phone was being operated from Mansa Devi Temple. They had also scrutinised the CCTV footage. Though the recording was not clear, the police could figure out the faces. During the interrogation, the couple confessed to the crime.
The couple already had a baby girl of about two-and-a-half years. “We have traced the parents. We will soon lodge them in lock-up. Their second daughter will be sent to Shishu Grah in Panchkula,” assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Mamta Sauda said.
Rakesh and Kiran had dumped their newly born daughter on the stairs of Mansa Devi Temple near a dustbin on Saturday. The girl was fully wrapped. When the matter came to the fore, the girl was taken to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, around 11.45 am.
But the whole incident of abandoning the girl got recorded on CCTV camera. The couple was also seen carrying another baby. They abandoned the baby girl at 9.23 am. After seven minutes, she started crying. Two devotees informed a guard at the temple who then came and lifted the girl. The police were then informed. A Rs 100 note was also found kept over the girl.
Both Rakesh and Kiran will now face trial under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code for abandoning the child.
Panchkula deputy commissioner of police Hamid Akhtar said the couple revealed that they abandoned the girl as they already had a baby girl.
