Panic gripped students of Government Elementary School, Phase 10, SAS Nagar, on Wednesday, after they discovered worms in the midday meal served to them.
School headmistress Kirandeep Kaur said as the lunch was being distributed, she detected worms in the food and informed the education department. Education department officials reached the spot immediately and sent the food back before it was consumed by students, she said. The students went without lunch for the day.
Officials who raided the kitchens where the food is cooked, discovered that even cooking ingredients were stored in unhygienic conditions, which could prove to be dangerous to children’s health.
The authorities have seized the food and have taken samples from the infested food to send them for laboratory tests.
On the other hand, Manjeet Singh Bhalla, manager of midday meals for schools in the district, said nothing had been found in the food samples which were procured after officials reached the spot.
Even the driver of the three-wheeler, who brought the food to school said it was infested with worms.
However, when contacted, SAS Nagar district education officer Mewa Singh, denied the matter entirely and said he was in a meeting with the Punjab School Education Board secretary and was unaware of the incident.
