Panic spread in Phase 7 after an inebriated head constable posted as security guard with a former MLA fired three gunshots in the air from his official weapon on Wednesday night.
Police have since arrested accused Nissan Singh (35) of 7th battalion of Punjab Armed Police, posted on security duty at former MLA Ranjit Singh Chhajalwadi's house. The weapon too has been seized.
The accused was sent in judicial custody by a local court on Thursday. "Nissan Singh was arrested after he fired gunshots in the air in an inebriated condition. The weapon has been seized and the accused sent in judicial custody," said SP (city) Swarndeep Singh.
As per the complaint lodged with Mataur police, complainant Praveen Kumar, the former MLA's driver, said that the drunk head constable fired three shots from his carbine at the roof of the garage used as living quarters by security staff of Chhajalwadi.
The incident took place when the entire area was plunged in darkness due to a power cut and majority of residents were awake.
Police sources said that Nissan Singh had sought leave but was denied the same, due to which he was frustrated. Sources also claimed that the former MLA had given him a dressing down on Wednesday morning. Sources said that Nissan Singh retired to his room in the evening, consumed liquor and fired in the air.
All attempts by media persons to meet the former MLA turned futile as security guards posted at his house refused to open the locked gate and even refused to answer queries on the matter.
