The syndicate meeting which continued for nearly eight hours discussed nearly 50 items.
The PU spokesman said that PU syndicate approved the university’s academic calendar. The teaching departments would open on July 7 and classes will resume on July 10 and on July 15 for the new admissions. The summer vacations will be from May 26 to July 6, 2014 while the autumn break will be observed from October 2 to October 11, 2014.
The summer vacation for next year is likely to be held from June 1 to July 9, 2015.The varsity syndicate also sanctioned Rs 10 lakh out of depreciation fund for purchase of nanodrop spectrometer and five refrigerators for laboratories. The syndicate also approved new qualifications for the post of chief security officer, PU and those securing below 50 percent marks in their graduation would not be eligible for assistant professor’s post in colleges.
A sum of Rs 29 Lakh for construction of a parking for new teachers flats on the campus was approved as well. The syndicate also debated the issue of increasing the retirement age from 60 years to 65 years but nothing was finalized. It was decided that a delegation would meet officials from the ministry of human resource development officials on the issue separately. The VC also informed the syndics that he had written on this particular issue recently to the centre, Chandigarh administration and Punjab .
FEE HIKE ISSUE
The syndicate constituted a new committee for finalising the fee structure of university teaching departments and its regional centers.
The new committee will have student president, Chandan Rana also on board and will also suggest ways to help poor students in the case of hike in fee.
It approved a policy for appointment of guest f aculty in the University. The appointment of guest faculty would be made through the selection committee headed by chairperson of the department.
MARKS FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE PART IN CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
The syndicate also approved proposal of awarding additional marks during admission for participation in cultural activities . The merit list prepared on the basis of marks in the previous qualifying examination and PU’s entrance test will also have credits for students who have bagged positions in zonal/inter-zonal and intra-university youth festivals.
