Pankaj Sidana of New Public School, Sector 18, produced a fine performance to win both junior (under-18) and youth (under-21) boys’ singles titles of the 27th Chandigarh State table tennis championship for Gurmeet Singh Grewal Memorial Trophy, being played at the Sector-23 TT Hall, on Saturday.

In the final of the junior section, Sidana cruised past Sahil Sharma of Ryan International School-49 3-1 (11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6) in a largely lopsided contest. In the semifinals played earlier, Sidana had defeated Divaksh (DAV Public School-8) 3-1 (11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9), while Sahil had edged out Shaurya Gupta (DAV-8) 3-2 (11-7, 8-11, 13-11, 11-6, 12-10).

In the youth section final, however, Sidana had to fight hard before trumping Prasoon of CCET 3-2 (11-9, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6). In the semifinals, Sidana had defeated Divaksh 3-0 (15-13, 11-7, 13-11), while Prasoon had ousted Shaurya 3-1 (11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 12-10).

In the girls’ event, the junior title was won by Pareen (DAV-8) after she got the better of her schoolmate Paavan 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 13-15, 11-5). Earlier in the semifinals, Paavan had defeated Arshita (DAV-8) 3-0 (7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8), while Pareen had downed Vibhuti (Gurukul Global School, Manimajra) 3-0 (11-9, 11-7 11-8). Pareen, however, fell short of repeating the feat in the youth category after losing to Kalyani of SD College, Sector 32, 0-3 (12-14, 9-11, 9-11) in the final. Earlier in the semifinals, Kalyani had defeated Paavan 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-6), while Pareen had pipped Naina (SD College) 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9).
