A couple here is accused of killing its mentally challenged minor daughter and trying to eliminate a nephew it suspected her to be in an illicit relationship with.

The murder happened on Monday at Jansuya village in Shambhu police jurisdiction of Patiala district but the police kept it from the media until now when they have arrested all the accused, including the victim’s parents and an uncle.

Confirming the arrest, Patiala senior superintendent of police Hardial Singh Mann said the parents who had lodged the first-information report (FIR) after the murder had turned out to be the killers. “On September 22, Jansuya villager Roshan Lal came to the Shambhu police station to report that his daughter had been missing since September 20, and that morning, the family had found her body at Niamatpur village,” said the SSP.

After autopsy, the police began the investigation and, based on it, arrested Roshan Lal; his wife, Suresh Kumari, and the victim’s uncle, Bhagwant Singh. The three are also charged with conspiring to kill the nephew.

“On the night of September 20, they had invited him to their house and got him drunk. The plan was to murder him when he was passed out. The boy sensed it and escaped, but they killed the girl and threw her body near Niamatpur,” said the SSP.

The three accused are in police custody for now.
