Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has asked the irrigation department to prepare a master plan for carrying out flood protection works effectively in the state.

Presiding over a high-level meeting of deputy commissioners on Monday to monitor the progress of flood protection works, Badal said the master plan would not only help the state spend funds judiciously on flood protection works but also save crores of funds being spent on giving compensation to flood victims whose crops and houses were extensively damaged, especially in the wake of execution of these works in a haphazard manner.

During the meeting, the deputy commissioners, especially from the flood-prone districts of Ferozepur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Rupnagar, raised the demand for financial resources to tackle the ensuing monsoon.

It was decided to provide 13 high-quality motor boats to various districts vulnerable to floods. The chief minister also directed the DCs to ensure completion of flood protection works in close supervision with officers of the drainage wing of the irrigation department, besides cleaning of drains and strengthening of 'dhussi' bandhs well in advance before the onset of monsoon.

Badal also asked the finance department to immediately release funds as estimated by the irrigation department and verified by the DCs of the districts on the basis of spot inspection.

Badal also asked the secretary, irrigation, and secretary, local government, to come out with a joint proposal to clean drains passing through the cities.

The meeting was attended by irrigation minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon; chief secretary Sarvesh Kaushal; principal secretary, finance, Vini Mahajan; financial commissioner, revenue, Karan Avtar Singh; secretary, irrigation, KS Pannu; secretary, science and technology, KAP Sinha; secretary, local government, Ashok Gupta; special principal secretaries to CM KJS Cheema and SK Raju; and various deputy commissioners and engineers of the irrigation department related to flood protection.
