A superintendent of police (SP) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his official residence in Model Town here on Monday.
Barjinder Singh Dhillon, 44, who was posted as SP, community policing, reportedly died of a bullet fired from an AK-47 assault rifle.
DIG Shive Kumar Verma, who visited the spot, said, “It may be an accidental fire or suicide. We are investigating the case.”
Dhillon was found dead in the afternoon when his wife had gone out to pick their two sons from school. A gunman and a cook were present in the house, but they didn’t hear the bullet sound. The bullet fired below the chin had pierced the SP’s neck.
The DIG said a maid noticed the body on the first floor and raised an alarm following which the gunman informed the police.
A police official said, “Dhillon was fond of weapons and maybe the AK-47 assault rifled had fired accidentally. Were he to commit suicide, he would have used his service revolver.”
The DIG said, “The police will reach a conclusion only after verifying the statement of the gunman from whom Dhillon had taken the AK-47 assault rifle before going upstairs.” He said Dhillon had come to his house for lunch and his body was spotted after two and a half hours of his arrival.”
A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered at Model Town police station.
The body has been sent to Rajindra Hospital for post-mortem.
Dhillon, who hails from Bhaddalwad village of Barnala district, had joined as inspector in Punjab Police in 1993. He served in various capacities in Malwa before being posted as SP (traffic) and SP (community policing).
