Under the National Horticulture Mission, Punjab has decided to set up two more citric estates, one each of litchi and pear, with technical assistance from Italy, besides setting up new technology at the production unit for virus-free potato seeds near Jalandhar.

The litchi estate would come up in Pathankot and the pear estate at Amritsar with the help of technical experts from Italy, Punjab horticulture director Dr Gurkanwal Singh said here on Friday.

He said 15-member farmers’ societies would run these estates and the department would provide them mini-tractors and other equipment.

He said the horticulture department had also set up the potato seed plant at Dhogri near Jalandhar in collaboration with Holland, in which the seed would be free from 16 kinds of viruses.
