Second year students of the Aravali hostel in PEC University of Technology protested demanding the termination of services of the mess contractor, forcing the college to shut down the mess on Sunday.
While the mess was to be shut down on May 20 and reopened only after the contractor's contract was renewed, students protested against the renewal. Students were protesting against the mess food since Saturday evening. With exams underway, university officials were forced to intervene into the issue.
While students alleged no action was taken by the college authorities despite repeated complaints about the quality of food served in the mess, the latter claimed that students only informed the college authorities on Saturday.
Dean, student welfare (DSW) Sanjeev Sofat said, "The matter is being looked into. We have shut down the mess and new contract will be soon floated, following which a new contractor will be appointed. Until then, he students will face no problems with the mess shutting down as there are six others in the college," he said.
