PGI contract workers call off strike
Contract workers called off their strike as the administration of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, agreed to take equal work, equal pay proposal for the contract workers to the standing finance committee of the institute.
Contract workers called off their strike as the administration of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, agreed to take equal work, equal pay proposal for the contract workers to the standing finance committee of the institute.
They called off the strike after the PGI management, PGI Contract Workers' Union and PGI Safai Karamchari Contract Workers' Union entered into an agreement before assistant labour commissioner (central) on the demand of same and similar wage to sanitation attendant, hospital attendant, security guards and bearers.
Significantly, the health services at the PGIMER were hit on Thursday and Friday, when around 1,500 contractual workers went on strike. They were demanding equal wages to regular staff as well as regularisation of their services.
These workers largely comprised hospital attendants, sanitary attendants, clerical staff and receptionists. There are total 1,580 contract workers who are members of the PGIMER.
