The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) will establish information kiosks where patients can get key information regarding the hospital's functioning.
According to the PGIMER officials, information kiosks, which will be placed in all buildings of the institute, will provide information about the doctors' rooms, status of patients in the ward, the services available and hospital charges.
For this purpose, the institute is procuring kiosks, which will be functional in the next two months.
Token system in pipeline
The institute said it was also making efforts to reduce the requirement of patients to stand in multiple queues. "We plan to implement a token-system through the hospital information system (HIS), so that the patient can go to a specific room in the OPD when their token number is displayed.
The patient's particulars, including his or her address and phone number will be captured only once at the time of first registration, and will be reused at all other places like labs and billing counters. Thus, decreasing the average waiting time," said Naveen Bindra, system analyst, PGIMER.
Pre-registration, mobile registration to follow
"Pre-registration will be the next step in this direction where a patient can enter his or her details on the web before a visit to any OPD," said Bindra.
He said the patient would receive a transaction number after following easy steps. Special counters would be set up where the pre-registered patients would be issued the unique central registration number. Dual monitors at registration counter is another such step for error-free registration of the patients. Mobile-based registration will also follow soon.
Nurses to admit discharge patients electronically
Besides that, the nurses in all 77 wards have been trained to admit and discharge the patients electronically. Tracking of details of the patients' stay in various wards can now be done by a few clicks in almost real time. This improves the way hospital beds are utilised as there is up-to-date information on the availability of beds in various wards.
Blood bank to also have computerised record
Blood Bank is another area where electronic record is helping in holding the details and aiding the blood-donation process, including processing of blood, component separation, issuing of blood to be transfused and the disposal of used blood bags. Blood donated in donation camps can now also be processed through the same software. This has benefited the patients through timely issue of blood in an error-free manner. The system can track each unit of blood from the donor to the recipient to the disposal of the bag, which helps in tracking and eliminating problems of transfusion reaction, etc.
Doctors to get direct access to MRI, CT scan images
PGI now intends to connect all radio-diagnosis machines on a network to give doctors access to the MRI and CT scan images in OPDs. It will also allow doctors to access these radio-diagnostic images on smart phones and PDAs.
Lab reports made available online
Another addition to improve patient care and experience is the launch of a Lab Investigation module in all major labs, which include biochemistry, haematology (coagulation), medical microbiology, endocrinology and parasitology departments. Interfacing of auto analyzers in the labs has reduced the time taken to prepare reports.
The reports are instantly made available on all computers in the institute and to all doctors in all OPDs and special clinics. In time we would like to phase out paper-based reports. An SMS facility will also be soon introduced for informing patients when their reports are ready to be accessed from the web. Print on demand facility will be available in the OPDs. Data Access policy is being decided keeping in mind the patients' convenience and their privacy.
