There’s hope for people suffering from rare endocrine disorders with Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, set to create country’s first-ever centre dedicated to their treatment.
The centre, which will have 35 beds, will be a part of the 250-bed extension of Nehru Hospital coming up at a cost of ` 100 crore on the PGIMER premises in Chandigarh.
Except the common diabetes and thyroid disorders, most diseases treated by endocrinologists fall in the category of rare endocrine disorders. According to experts, only 1 of 1.5 lakh persons suffers from these disorders, which include genetic and transgender problems.
Dr Sanjay Badada, associate professor, endocrinology, PGIMER, said, “We are aiming to start it by March 2015. The centre, which will have 35 beds, will be a part of the 250-bed extension of Nehru Hospital coming up at a cost of ` 100 crore.”
According to department officials, so far the clinical practice of endocrinology at PGIMER remained focused only on diabetes and thyroid. “The new centre will help carry out research and treatment of many other disorders,” they added.
Having a 90-bed cancer block, modern modular operation theatres and 80 new private rooms, the new building will cater to patients coming to the departments of radiotherapy and oncology, endocrinology, hepatology and ENT. Central public works department, Chandigarh, is carrying out construction of the building, which is in the final stages.
Significantly, Nehru Hospital, which is also known as Old PGIMER building has 80 private rooms so far. The building was built in 1960s but hardly any private rooms were added to it.
DIABETIC FOOT TO BE DIAGNOSED EARLY
The endocrinology department of the institute has started new diagnostic tests for patients suffering from diabetic foot and also developed special shoes for such patients. Common foot complications in diabetics include ulceration, infection, progressive degeneration of a weight bearing joints. These may lead to gangrene and invite amputation. The shoes will help reduce the risk of skin breakdown in diabetics.
