Two premier medical institutes of the country-the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh-have left medicos in the lurch by scheduling their entrance examination for postgraduate courses on the same date.
The admission notice of AIIMS and PGIMER, which appeared in various newspapers and on the institutes' websites recently, mentions that the entrance examination for admission to MD/MS courses will take place on November 18. The session at both the institutes will start from January next year.
The decision has limited the options of a large number of medical graduates, leaving them disappointed. Both the institutes are the most sought after in the country as far as post-graduation studies in medical sciences are concerned.
After years of preparation, more than 5,000 medical students appear every year for around 200 seats in 20 specialities and super-specialities at the PGIMER. The number of candidates at AIIMS is even higher. Both the medical institutes compete with each other in various specialities when it comes to post-graduation.
There seems to be no hope for medical graduates as the PGIMER is adamant on conducting the entrance exam on the scheduled date.
PGIMER spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said their admission schedule was fixed about a year ago. "Since AIIMS had announced its schedule only recently, it should have adjusted the date accordingly," she said.
