A local court on Thursday held a resident of Pinjore guilty of killing his wife with an iron rod.

The incident occurred in January 14 earlier this year. Ram Kumar, a farmer, and his wife Reena, who had been married for a year, had frequent arguments in the month leading to her murder.

The couple had gone to Reena’s parents’ house on January 14. On their return that very night, a heated argument ensued between the two following which Kumar hit Reena with an iron rod in a fit of rage.

The couple lived on the first floor of the house. Following the incident, Kumar came down the ground floor.

It was Kumar’s brother who saw Reena and alerted his family following which she was taken Alchemist Hospital in Sector 21, Panchkula.

Reena was eight-months pregnant at the time of the incident and succumbed to her injuries on January 17.

However, she gave birth to a girl while she was at the hospital. While the defence had argued that Reena had died after she fell down from the first floor, the postmortem revealed that she died of head injuries suffered from being hit on the head several times. Police also recovered blood-stained sheets and quilt from the house.

“The clinching evidence against Ram Kumar was the statement of the doctors who said she was hit with an iron rod. Also, the same rod was recovered on the identification of Ram Kumar,” explained Narinder Bhoria, public prosecutor in the case.

Among Kumar’s witnesses was Reena’s sister, who was married into the same family and claimed that the victim has fallen drom the firtst floor.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced onNovember 29.
