UT electricity department's plan to appoint a consultant for its privatisation has been criticised by its employees' union.
UT Powermen Union protested outside the Sector 40 electricity department office here on Wednesday, opposing the opening of the tender for the appointment of a consultant to corporatise the department.
The union also has decided to stage protest in this regard on Friday and burn an effigy of the UT administration. Addressing the rally on Wednesday, the union leadership criticised the administration for what it described as the “corporatisation of the department” and termed it as “anti employees move”.
The union warned the administration of a strike if the decision to appoint a consultant was not cancelled.
Union president Ram Saroop said that instead of filling up vacant posts and procurement of material, the administration was taking interest to privatise the department.
The union demanded the administration to install 11KV lines and insulated conductors by replacing all defective meters. The union also called for a need to put a check on power theft. The leaders of the union urged employees to participate in Friday's rally.
