A day after a 21-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight at Phase 5 here, the police are looking into whether it was a planned murder.
The police are considering various theories, including if the accused, Gurmeet Singh alias Gora Sandhu, a leader of the Student Organization of Panjab University (SOPU), Ferozepur, shot the woman from point blank range for refusing his marriage proposal or if there was a premeditated plan.
They said Gurmeet used an illegal .32-bore revolver that he took from his cousin brother to commit the crime. Cops are also trying to locate Gurmeet’s friend Jagroop Singh, who accompanied him to the crime scene, with the hope that he would spill the beans.
Superintendent of police (SP) Ashish Kapoor said the victim, Amandeep Kaur, was shot with a .32-bore revolver, which the accused borrowed from his cousin brother before reaching SAS Nagar.
The cop added that five teams had been despatched to Ferozepur to arrest Gurmeet. Raids had been made at his native place and also at his relatives’ houses to trace him, but in vain. He said they were trying to ascertain if Gurmeet had any criminal record.
Meanwhile, the police have recovered two cars from the spot, both bearing Ferozepur numbers registered in the names of locals Judge Singh and Partap Singh. The police are also trying to verify the role of the car owners in the matter.
