The Punjab government on Friday appointed senior BJP leader Rajinder Bhandari as the second vice-chairman of the Punjab State Planning Board.
Bhandari would join Trident Group chairman Rajinder Gupta, who already holds the post of vice-chairman of the board chaired by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The BJP leader had earlier served as the board's vice-chairman in 2011-12. The CM cleared his file for the second term, a spokesman said here.
"Bhandari (as the vice-chairman earlier) played an instrumental role in strengthening the planning process in the state, besides initiating schemes and projects for overall development of the state and welfare of the people," the spokesman said.
Bhandari, a former MLA, had lost the 2012 assembly polls from Ludhiana (West). Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, "I want to start afresh by getting maximum funds for Punjab from the Centre."
The former state BJP president said his appointment was not just a 'decoration' but a mission, which he wanted to combine with his vision to improve the state's fiscal health.
When asked whether he would enjoy salary and perks of a cabinet minister, unlike his colleague Rajinder Gupta, Bhandari said it would not be right to compare his status with that of Gupta, the owner of a big business empire.
