Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday called upon the people to launch a plantation campaign for an “evergreen revolution” by planting a sapling each on the birth of a child in the family.

He made this statement in his inaugural address during the national stakeholders’ meet on ‘Trees Outside Forests and Wood-based Enterprise’ held at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

Badal also emphasised the need for a mass awareness campaign on the significance of trees in life, adding that the Punjab government was determined to enhance the area under agro-forestry from the existing 6.3% to 15% in the coming years, a spokesman said here.

Badal said the upcoming mini-FRI at Ladhowal near Ludhiana would be instrumental in bringing about the “evergreen revolution” by promoting agro-forestry in a big way.
