The Chandigarh administration has put a complete ban on the use of polythene and plastic carry bags in the city from Tuesday.
Sub-divisional magistrate (central) Prince Dhawan, in the exercise of the powers vested under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), imposed a complete ban on the use of polythene and plastic carry bags in the area falling in the central subdivision.
He said no person, including shopkeepers, vendors, wholesale traders, retailers and hawkers would use polythene and plastic carry bags for supply of goods. No person would manufacture, store, import, sell or transport polythene/plastic carry bags in Union Territory, Chandigarh, he added.
The orders will come into force from Tuesday and will be effective for a period of 60 days.
The violators will be subjected to rigorous imprisonment extended up to five years or fine of Rs 1 lakh or both depending on the extent of violation. For habitual violators, an additional fine of Rs 5,000 per day will be imposed and there are provisions of imprisonment up to seven years depending upon the extent of violation, stated the official.
