A five-day all India conference of plastic surgeons will start at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on Wednesday.
The 49th Annual Conference of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India is being organised by the plastic surgery department of the PGIMER.
Dr Ramesh Sharma, head, plastic surgery, PGIMER, and president of the association, said more than 800 plastic surgeons from all over the country and abroad will participate in the conference.
Leading plastic surgeons from US, Europe and Australia will also be participating in the meeting. There are also participants from the neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Dr Sharma said, “Plastic surgery has undergone sea change over the last few decades. Initially, conceived as a problem solving specialty to find answers for coverage of difficult wounds and tissue defects, it has now grown into an all-encompassing discipline. There is a general perception in the lay public that plastic surgery is synonymous with cosmetic surgery giving an elitist hue to the specialty.”
The experts will discuss the contemporary issues in the plastic surgery, including both cosmetic and reconstructive aspects.
The discussion will also focus on making the benefits of the plastic surgery available to all the sections of society.
