In town to put a new spin on the existing club nights, Mumbai-based DJ Rink aka Snehal Shah spun out retro Bollywood tunes from the ’70s through the ’90s at a local hotel on Friday night. When we asked if she thought the youngsters would like to groove to old numbers, she expressed confidence in making it work.
"My retro music is special because I have mixed it with beats that will get the crowd moving," she said, adding, "Some songs are evergreen for a reason."DJ Rink’s been coming to Chandigarh for the last eight and believes that the city’s attitude to music is evolving from Punjabi music to EDM (electronic dance music) because of people’s growing awareness about famed music festivals such as Sunburn and Tomorrowland.
“I get asked about Djs like Avicii and Hardwell, but a few years ago that was a recipe for killing the crowd’s mood,” she laughs. Having been granted residency in Dubai, the DJ also plays there every month. With a background in marketing and coming from a business family, Rink says her parents initially had no idea what DJ’ing was all about.
“I organised a party for my family members where I played my tunes. Once my father saw that this is something even our family could enjoy, he gave me his whole hearted support,” she smiles. The world behind the console, says Rink, is no longer dominated by men. “When I started out, I was constantly judged. People were skeptical, but I felt I had to prove them wrong and I did,” she says assertively.
Rink has also played on the sets of Sony’s Extra Innings during the IPL (Indian Premier League) and has got everyone — including Navjot Singh Sidhu and Kapil Dev —dancing. “Sidhu paaji is definitely the best dancer,” she gushes. Having rubbed shoulders with Bollywood stars, Rink says actor Akshay Kumar has the most fun personality whereas Ranbir Kapoor is humility defined. Having released her album, The Way You Like Me, in March 2013, she is now working on her second album, titled Loving My Life. “This will have a lot of strong Arabic beats,” she signs off.
