Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Chandigarh around 11 am today along with Girija Vyas, former president of National Commission for Women of India, to hand over keys of flats to slum-dwellers at the Housing Complex in Dhanas.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab governor Shivraj Patil, Haryana governor Jagannath Pahadia and local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal welcomed him on the occasion.
The PM handed over flat keys to 10 families and congratulated the UT administration for successfully implementing the slum rehabilitation scheme.
He hoped the city would be first in country to achieve the slum free tag.
The UT administration, under the slum rehabilitation scheme, has constructed around 12, 000 one room flats. Of which 8, 000 were allocated today.
Around 6, 110 families of colony no 5, would be re-located to these one-room flats in Dhanas.
Each flat is being allotted jointly in the name of husband and wife as a measure to empower women.
