After about three-and-a-half month's intense investigation, the government railway police (GRP) have finally zeroed in on a serving army man for his alleged involvement in murdering a 33- year old French national Franck Wilfred.
The GRP inspector general of police V Kamaraja told HT on Friday that lance naik Charanjit Singh of 109 Engineers regiment was arrested from his native place in Punjab for brutally hitting Wilfred on board Sachkhand Express on April 29.
A resident of Kamma village near Khanna in Ludhiana district was produced in a Karnal court of Rajni Kaushal on Friday afternoon.
Wilfred was found unconscious at Karnal railway station and was rushed to PGIMER, Chandigarh where five days later he succumbed to injuries.
A travelling ticket examiner (TTE) Manoj Kumar, who was on duty onboard Sachkhand Express, is already booked for the foreigners murder.
The GRP had charged Manoj for murder after the police seized Wilfred's personal belongings including, a photocopy of his tourist visa, medical prescription, a camera pouch and two packets of cigarettes, from his (TTE's) possession.
Manoj had failed to give satisfactory reason how the victim's belongings reached him and why he did not inform the railways or GRP authorities about the same.
He is still in the judicial custody and lodged at Karnal district jail.
