Two youngsters, including an electrical diploma student, were arrested for their involvement in cases theft and snatching. The deputy superintendent of police (DSP) (Central) Ashish Kapoor said the youths took to crime to foot in their liquor bills.
Kapoor said four cases had been cracked with the arrest of the two. The police recovered a bike, a purse, liquor bottles, ATM cards and documents from their possession.
One of the accused, Sahil, a resident of Sector 41, was employed as a helper in a canteen at the government college in Sector 11. The other accused, Ankush, lived in Sector 23 and is a student of a college in Kharar.
Kapoor said the two had been apprehended on a motorcycle at a police check near the Sector-23 bridge, on Wednesday at 4pm. The police found snatched and stolen articles on them.
The two confessed to stealing and snatching, said the police.
In their latest act, they had snatched the purse of a bank-employee Sunanda Sharma, a resident of sector 22, on Tuesday. The purse contained an ATM card, bank keys, Rs 1,000 and a credit card.
They had also made an aborted antching bid on the same day. The victim had noted the registration number of their bike, which a police team led by sub-inspector Harminderjit Singh traced to Sector 23.
The police also checked the CCTV footages of the ATMs, which confirmed that the two had made transactions from stolen cards. Police sources revealed that the two probably had other accomplices too.
