The police on Sunday claimed to have cracked the Rs 1.53 crore heist which took place at Rajat Jewellers in Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula, on July 13 last year, with the arrest of one person.
“The accused was among the eight persons who were involved in the incident. We will produce him before a court on Monday and seek a police remand. The recovery is yet to be made,” said commissioner of police, Ambala-Panchkula, OP Singh. The accused has been identified as Sonu. The police have also identified seven other persons who were involved in the loot. “We will soon arrest the remaining accused,” said Singh.
The accused was arrested from Punjab, but the police did not reveal the place.
On July 13, 2014, four armed men and a woman held owner and two employees of Rajat Jewellers hostage and decamped jewellery and cash. The accused also beat up the showroom owner, Aashi Khanna. The accused, who was speaking in Punjabi, also took away the owner’s Swift Dzire car and abandoned it in Zirakpur. Another car used in the crime was snatched from Nawanshahr.
At the time of the incident, the owner said they had suffered a loss of Rs 50 lakh. But after checking the bills, it turned out to be `1.53 crore.
The police even tried to announce a cash award of Rs 2 lakh for giving information of the accused, but the police headquarters did not approve it.
