The police have started investigations into the death of deputy director, director public instructions (DPI) office, Punjab, Vinod Kumar, 57, who committed suicide by jumping in Sukhna Lake here on Tuesday.
Sources in the police said call records of Vinod Kumar were being scrutinised to know about the people he spoke to before taking the extreme step.
The police are also trying to ascertain who he was in touch with two days before the suicide. Police sources said when Kumar’s body was fished out, there were 1,100 in his pocket but no identity card.
His wife Vijaya Kumari had told the police that Kumar was in tension for the last two days, but she did not know the reason behind his distress.
The police are also going into the details as to what was the immediate provocation for the officer to take the extreme step.
The panel of doctors, who conducted the post mortem, stated that the cause of death was drowning. Kumar was among the three officials of the Punjab school education department who were indicted in the AN Jindal Commission report that probed into the scam in purchase of school library books worth 9 crore and science lab kits worth 7.5 crore.
He had also remained district education officer (DEO), SAS Nagar, earlier.
Meanwhile, for mer deputy speaker of Punjab, Bir Devinder Singh, demanded a CBI probe into his death.
He said, “The sudden tragic end of his life raises many eyebrows, therefore all aspects leading to his death necessitate a thorough probe by CBI. Kumar was one among those framed by Justice AK Jindal commission of enquiry. ”
Station house officer (SHO) of Phase 8 police station, SAS Nagar, Gurdeep Singh Saini, said the deceased’s phone, which he left in his car, was in their custody. “While scanning call details, we did not found any suspicious call or message,” he added.
