The Punjab government on Friday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that it has released an amount of Rs 124.40 crore to 2,714 educational institutions in the state on account of post-matric scholarship for scheduled caste students.
It was also informed that a proposal of Rs 301.56 crore had been sent to the Centre for approval for further disbursement of amount. At the same time, the state government has requested the Centre for release of central assistance to the tune of Rs 209 crore.
The court was informed that a meeting was convened with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University, Ludhiana; Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana and Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar.
In case of LPU payment of Rs 66.93 lakh has been made in respect of 139 SC students. However, other institutes had already charged fee from the SC students and no claim of universities was due for payment.
The petitions filed by Association of Volunteers for Students’ Rights (AVSR), Chandigarh, and Jaspal Singh had sought directions to the Punjab government to strictly implement the post-matric scholarship scheme.
The Centre had come out with a scheme known as the postmatric scholarship, as per which scheduled caste (SC) students, whose parents’ income does not exceed Rs 2 lakh per annum, are eligible for scholarship after matriculation.
