Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa's welcoming the directive of the Punjab and Haryana high court to Punjab to release Rs 3 lakh to each of the 2,806 panchayats elected unanimously in 2008 did not go down well with Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit Singh.
Soon after he learnt from mediapersons that Bajwa had welcomed the court's decision on Friday, Rana said it was premature for Bajwa to have done so.
"How can he (Bajwa) do so when he does not have the copy of the order of the court's decision. I was the one working on the issue and even filed a petition in this regard. Once I have the copy of the order, I will hold a press conference and explain the entire issue to the people of Punjab," said Rana Gurjit. "This is no way to take credit when someone else has worked hard on the issue," he added.
When contacted, Bajwa said, "I know Rana Gurjit filed the petition. When the court's decision came, I was the one who congratulated Rana and said it should be a welcome development for panchayats that had been deprived of grants for so long by the SAD-BJP government. I appreciate his individual efforts. What's wrong if the PPCC president also welcomes the same? It was ensured that the party statement carried Rana Gurjit's name."
