Pre-monsoon shower cools tricity, but woes continue

Continuous downpour in the city is a favourable condition for the monsoons to approach in the next three days, says the meteorological department.

The city was lashed with heavy downpour on Saturday, recording a total of 48.1 millimetre (mm) rainfall during the continuous showers that started around 11am. The temperatures have also come down by 14 degrees from normal, making the city cooler due to pre-monsoon showers.

The maximum temperature of the city was recorded at 23.7 degree Celsius (°C), while the minimum was recorded at 21.3°C.

According to the Meteorological centre, the Southwest monsoon has further advanced to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

"The weather is being influenced due to the arrival of southwest monsoon arrival in J&K. Conditions are favourable for further advancing of southwest monsoon to Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh, during the next three days," said an official of the Meteorological department.

The weatherman has forecast moderate to rather heavy rain/ thundershowers for the next three days which will occur at many places in the region.

Railway services disrupted
Heavy rain in parts of north India disrupted the train movement to city on Saturday causing inconvenience to the commuters.

According to railway officials, over five trains, including morning Shatabdi Express, Unchahar Express, Paschim Express and Sadbhavna Express, arrived in the city several hours behind schedule.

Chandigarh railway station superintendent Parveen Kumar said several trains were behind schedule from one to two hours due to bad weather.

Flights cancelled
Two flights were cancelled from the city airport on Saturday. They are Jet Airways flight from Chandigarh to Jaipur and Spice Airways flight form Chandigarh to Delhi.
