In a shocking incident, the district police on late Wednesday night arrested principal of a private school on the charges of sexually assaulting a nursery class student.

The accused Manoj Gautam was produced in a local court on Thursday and was sent to 14-day judicial remand.

Gautam, a Congress activist, is employed at Sarv Vidya Public School at Matak Majri village in Indri sub division. The school is run by Krishna Mehta, mother of a senior Haryana Civil Service (HCS) officer.

According to a complaint lodged at Indri police station on November 2, Gautam had allegedly tried to rape a three-and-a-half year student on October 31.

In a police complaint, the mother alleged that the incident had taken place at the principal office.

The station house officer (SHO) of Indri Anil Kundu said that during the investigation, another minor girl child leveled similar allegations against the principal.

Kundu asked this reporter to call him later for further details but he did not take calls made on his official cell phone.

Meanwhile, a large number of social organisations and private school managements of the district have come in support of the accused and claimed that he was implicated in a fabricated case.

However, they failed to support their allegations against the complainant.

They jointly demanded narco analysis and lie detection test on the accused and complainant to unravel truth.

At a press conference held here on Thursday, the president of Karnal district CBSE affiliated schools Rajan Lamba said that on October 31, Gautam was at a meeting of literature lovers in Karnal city.

Lamba said that being the last working day before the Diwali break, the entire staff was present on the school premises and they voted for Gautam's innocence.

"He (Gautam) is known as a social activist and poet and he is victimised for reasons unknown so far. There are several discrepancies in the FIR that hint at conspiracy. Though the alleged crime took place on October 31, the family approached the police on November 2. There is no medical proof on record along with the police complaint that suggests an attempt of sexual assault on the child," said Lamba.

Pritpal Singh Pannu, chairman of National Integration Forum of Activists and Artists (NIFAA) said that on October 31, all students had left the school on buses to their homes between 11.30 am-11.45 am and Gautam had reached the school at around 12.15 pm after a meeting in Karnal.

"We demand a fair police investigation by an official not below the rank of a deputy superintendent of police (DSP)," he said.

Meanwhile, the local police kept mum on the case and the superintendent of police Shashank Anand did not respond to the calls and text messages sent on his official cell phone to get his response on the issue.
