City residents have a reason to smile as the private agency hired by the municipal corporation (MC) to remove encroachments began their work here on Wednesday.
Facing a severe staff crunch and continuous complaints of encroachments pouring in from various parts of the township, the civic body hired a Panckula-based private agency for the first time to remove encroachments across the district.
In the first week, the agency, Global Securex, will keep a record of all encroachment areas in the township and maintain it database, which will then be submitted to the MC. It will later issue notices signed by MC officials to violators, and stipulated time will be given to remove the same, failing which a fine will be imposed, along with removal of encroachments.
The worst affected areas in the township in which encroachments are a regular affair, include Phases 1, 4, 5, 3B2, 10 and 11. More than 1,000 illegal shops and rehris have mushroomed up at these places.
SAS Nagar municipal corporation commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta said, “The agency has a staff of 12 people and their vehicles will be equipped with modern gadgets. The agency has started working from today. We have also empowered them to impose fine on violators. However, they will be supervised by our officers.”
The agency did video recording of encroachments in Phase 11 on Wednesday.
Former MC president Rajinder Rana said, “It was the need of the hour as encroachments are rampant in the town. Most MC officers were not working sincerely for their removal. We hope that the town will be cleaner now.”
