The local police on Sunday lathicharged the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were protesting against union railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal outside his residence in Sector 28. Around seven members of the student outfit sustained injuries in the police assault.

The police also detained organising secretary of local unit of ABVP Dinesh Chauhan and organising secretary of ABVP, Panjab University, Sumeet Randhawa.

Around 50 members of ABVP had gathered outside the residence of Bansal around 1:30pm, demanding his resignation in the wake of arrest of his nephew by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the charge of taking bribe from a railway official on the assurance of plum posting.

The trouble started when the members of AVBP broke barricades and forced their way near the house of Bansal. The members also burnt an effigy of Bansal and raised slogans against him.

The supporters of Congress, including former mayor and councillor Pardeep Chhabra, who were present there, entered into an argument with the AVBP activists. The verbal confrontation turned violent, when the Congress supporters allegedly manhandled AVBP members.

Chhabra confirmed that there was a clash between Congress supports and AVBP activists, but denied his involvement in the scuffle.

The police first warned the members of AVBP to disperse but as the members did not budge, the cops resorted to baton charge to disperse the crowd. The cops were seen chasing AVBP supporters.

The injured protestors were taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 for treatment.

Lashing out at the police for use of force against AVBP members, Vikas Sharma, convener of local unit of ABVP, said that the cops used force against them on behest of the Congress.

Giving details of their next course of action, he said that they would lodge a complaint against Sector 26 SHO for targeting them and demand his suspension. The student body will launch a statewide protest against Bansal in Punjab from Monday. They will also hold a rally on Panjab University campus.
