Colleges in the city affiliated to Panjab University (PU) are a worried lot due to the upcoming student council elections.

Expressing their distaste against the trend of holding student elections, college officials said this was nothing but a reason for students to indulge in hooliganism.

They further said they had conveyed their resentment regarding the matter even in the past.
The management also said there was no mechanism to contain violence during student elections and all they could do was be dependent on the police.

Speaking to HT, DAV College principal BC Josan said, “We have opposed student council elections for a long time now because all it does is promote violence and undemocratic behaviour on campus. We are also burdened by the semester system from this academic session onwards and cannot afford disruption in classes.”
Authorities from all colleges informed that PU had not paid any heed to requests for scrapping away student elections.

One of the senior management officials from a college said, “The varsity has an entire security force and yet they are not able to handle students. How do they expect us to handle all of this in the absence of a support mechanism?”

In previous years, colleges have written to both the UT administration and PU to not hold such elections.
SD College principal Bhushan K Sharma said, “We have already conveyed to PU authorities that we cannot hold elections as we don’t have the preparedness to manage the chaos that ensues during elections.”
