Three Panjab University female students had a harrowing time on Sunday morning when the elevator they were travelling in developed a snag and got stuck between the floors at the Girls Hostel No 7, remaining trapped there for nearly 45 minutes. Varsity officials said the students reported the incident at around 10:30 am.
“The girls were coming down in the lift when the power suddenly tripped. The lifts are calibrated in such a way that if this happens they halt at the closest floor to enable the occupants to exit,” said a PU official said, adding however in this case the lift stopped between two floors.
As the panicked girls pressed different buttons the doors of the lift, which till then were half open, closed completely.
The hostel staff had a tough time in calling in electricity department technicians as it was a Sunday.
Later the hostel security staff along with fire brigade and electricity department staff managed to get the elevator’s doors opened and rescue the girls, the entire operation taking almost an hour.
“The students were feeling suffocated. After administering them first aid they were advised rest. Their condition is normal now,” the official added.
