The Panjab University (PU) is now considering allowing female hostellers to study in the University's central library, the AC Joshi Library, till midnight.
A meeting on the issue was between Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) members, PU Dean Student Welfare (DSW), Navdeep Goyal, DSW (women) Nandita Singh and librarian Raj Kumar held on Wednesday.
“The librarian will give a complete report on the issues discussed by next week. We will take a final decision only after that,” said Navdeep Goyal.
While the demand to extend the library hours for female hostel residents has been long pending, the varsity had not given a nod citing security reasons.
According to the current rule, residents of the women's hostels must report back to their respective hostels by 10 pm. Those entering after the time limit are penalised. Nearly 70% of the students at PU are women.
Students had demanded the extension of library timings during examinations and provision of shuttle service for women from the library to their hostels.
Students have also been demanding the deployment of a female security personnel be deployed at the library during examinations. They have also demanded that the third floor of the library, shut during the night, must be kept open during examinations to avoid overcrowding of the library.
“PU should initiate remedial measures for the same so that students studies are not affected,” said PUCSC president Chandan Rana.
Installation of more printers in the computer cell of the library is also among their demands.ted.
