After witnessing violence and disruption in studies this past week, Panjab University has decided form a new committee to have a fresh look at the proposal of hiking fee, up to 20% for self-financed and other courses.
The decision came after a Senate meeting on Saturday failed to reach any consensus on the issue even after three hours of deliberations. This is the second time in the past six months that the varsity has backtracked on its decision to go ahead with the fee hike.
As the issue was being debated, students from almost all political parties protested outside the administrative block where the meeting was taking place. The groups called off the protests after the decision was put in abeyance.
The fee committee, which examined the matter following the agitation proposed up to 20% fee hike for students of general courses and 10% for those in the self-financed courses. The new fee structure was to be imposed on first-year students.
The violence seen on March 18 forced the PU on back foot as all the student parties joined SFS on the issue and the lathicharge by police and alleged brutalities received condemnation from various quarters. Nine students have been booked by police under various sections including rioting for March 19, violence on the campus.
The officials said that the fee hike was proposed after seven years. “Had violence not happened, the fee hike would have been cleared,” an official said.
SFS president Arishdeep Singh told HT that that the protest had been called off. The nine students booked have reportedly approached Chandigarh SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill in the matter.
