If all goes well, the south campus of the Panjab University will be a Wi-Fi zone by the start of the next academic session. The south campus, Sector 25, houses the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), a dental science college and the University Institute of Applied Management Studies, among other institutes, as well as various hostels.

Computer centre director K Tankeshwar said that the varsity would utilise the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) grant given by the central government's science and technology department, for providing the facility. The varsity is expected to get `34.8 crore as grant for the development of research infrastructure for the period 2014-18.

“We are awaiting the grant, which could be disbursed any time now. They work will begin as soon as we receive it,” said Tankeshwar, adding that it would then take two months to complete the project.

The project is estimated to cost `1 crore.

The varsity's main campus is already a Wi-Fi zone, provided at the cost of `3.5 crore.

Panjab University Campus Student Council, (PUCSC) Chandan Rana said that the south campus should have been provided the facility long ago. “It houses engineering and management institutes. Also new hostels have come up. It should not be delayed further,” he said.
