The student bodies at Panjab University (PU) have formed a joint students' action committee to protest against the proposed fee hike.
The committee comprises Indian National Student Organisation (INSO), Hindustan Students' Association (HSA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and Student Organisation of India (SOI), Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Students' for Society (SFS). The committee has appealed to students to support them in opposing the fee hike.
However, the university authorities have urged students to resist from participating in protests. Dean student welfare (DSW) Navdeep Goyal stated the fee structure at the PU was expected to continue lower than that in their peer universities. It is proposed that additional income that could accrue from proposed enhanced fee would be entirely spent on the student's programmes, including enhanced allocation for economically-weaker sections.
The varsity has proposed a fee hike of 5% with upper limit of Rs 1,500 for all courses, including self- finance for the next academic session. The last revision of the fee was done in May this year after the gap of six years.
