The Panjab University (PU) syndicate on Saturday approved the introduction of semester system in its 188 affiliated colleges in Punjab and Chandigarh from the 2014-15 academic session.
In a eight-hour meeting, the syndicate decided that the recommendations of the Board of Studies of all subjects would be complied and forwarded to the faculties concer ned for final approval of the respective syllabus and the paper pattern. The exercise, the PU said, would be completed before May 15.
A special session of the senate will be called to give the final nod to the new system. For this year, nearly 1 lakh first-year students in PU’s affiliated colleges would be admitted under the new pattern of exams. Students in various colleges in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal would now be able to seek migration to PU and viceversa as they would now have the same system. PU is the lone university in the region, not to have adopted the semester system.
Colleges will not have difficulty in getting grants from the centre under Rashtriya Uchhtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for which semester system was a pre-requisite. The syndicate also decided to form two committees, to be formed by the vice-chancellor, to monitor the new system.
The academic calendar for 2014-15 for postgraduate courses would be followed for undergraduate courses as PG courses already have semester system.
