PU to devise mechanism to deal with student agitations

Days after police lathicharge on protesting students, Panjab University has decided to devise a 'formal mechanism' to help dealing with student agitations.

Dean Student Welfare Navdeep Goyal said that he met members of Students for Society (SFS), which had protested against the university's proposal of 20% fee hike for 25 days, on Tuesday and asked them to give suggestions.
He said that other students could also give their suggestions.

"An official notice will be issued very soon," Goyal added.

Almost all students' groups have been opposing police presence on the campus. The recent cane charge on SFS students has only served to fuel the blazing debate on the extent of police intervention that should be allowed on the campus.

The university also came under fire for not putting enough efforts to convince the protesters and holding talks with them to break the logjam.

"The idea is to form a panel of student representatives from such groups to seek their help in case of a deadlock between students and administration," Goyal added.

The senate meeting held last week on the rollback of the fee hike also observed that there was no mechanism in place to engage agitating students in a dialogue.

Meanwhile, the Student for Society (SFS), on Tuesday, said that reports of two of students who faced injuries in the police lathicharge revealed that they have suffered partial hearing loss due to 'police brutalities.' The body's president Arishdeep Singh said that while one student, Suchinderpal Singh, had a clot in the upper eardrum of the left ear, the other, Damanpreet Singh, also sustained injuries and a blood clot on the lower eardrum of his left ear.
