Panjab University authorities held a meeting with the representatives of Students for Society (SFS) to address issues raised by the student body.
Damanpreet, general secretary SFS said, "The authorities have agreed to set up a consulting committee against sexual harassment. Members of the committee will be elected from different hostels." He said the committee would assist students in dealing with sexual harassment cases and take up the cases with Panjab University Committee Against Sexual Harassment (PUCASH).
SFS has been staging protest from the past 11 days to press for their demands. The meeting was attended by dean Students Welfare (men) professor Navdeep Goyal, DSW (women) and professor Nandita Singh. Various proposals were discussed during the meeting, to resolve the demands of the students.
The demands made by the students include, the registration of sexual harassment and criminal cases taken up by PUCASH and participation of students, teaching and non-teaching staff in the PUCASH through elections like Jawahar Lal Nehru University. Demand for putting up notice boards on the campus displaying information about PUCASH has also been sought.
The student body has also been pressing for earmarking of vehicle-free zones. Damanpreet said, the authorities have agreed to conduct a survey. SFS leaders threatened that the protests would continue until any written communication is made in this regard.
