Panjab University (PU) vice chancellor (V-C) once again invited flak, this time from the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA). The association is against the V-C's move to constitute a committee to monitor the functioning of PU's dental college, comprising mostly outsiders, without assigning any apparent reasons.

PU V-C Arun Grover has formed the monitoring committee on the request of one of the nominated senate members, Akhtar Mehmood. Reportedly, Mehmood had suggested the names of seven members in a letter to the V-C for being inducted in the committee. The V-C retained these seven names, added a few more and appointed Mehmood as the chairperson of the committee. The V-C's decision was criticised in the general body meeting (GBM) of PUTA and the president was asked to take up the issue with the V-C.

The PUTA wants to know the purpose of the committee. Keshav Malhotra, a faculty member in the evening department, said, "Forming such a committee to oversee the functioning of the institute is not justified. What is there that the faculty and heads of departments cannot handle, but need to have a committee comprising mainly outsiders?"

Karamjit Singh, who is also a senator and a faculty at the university business school (UBS), said, "Anyone from the senate will write to the V-C and he will form a committee and make the senate member the chairman. The purpose of such a committee has to be clarified first".

Davinder Singh, assistant professor at the dental college said the institute did not need a monitoring committee, that too without any representative from the faculty. He appealed the PUTA to take up the issue. PUTA president Mohammad Khalid said, "I will look into the matter; after gathering all the details, I will take it up with the V-C. All committees serve a purpose and this one should also justify itself. If we are not satisfied, we shall ask higher-ups to dissolve the committee". Meanwhile, Grover remained unavailable for comments.
