As many as 123 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab will go to the polls on February 25.This was announced by Punjab state election commissioner Shivinder Singh Brar here on Saturday.
Brar said the byelection to a ward in the nagar panchayat of Bariwala in Muktsar district would also be held on February 25 and the counting of votes would take place immediately after the polling.
Brar said the commission would issue a notification with regard to the aforesaid polls of the municipal councils, nagar panchayats and the ward bypoll on February 10 and immediately the model code of conduct would come into force.
He said the code of conduct would be applicable to all areas that fell within the jurisdiction of these 123 municipal councils, nagar panchayats and the ward where the bypoll was to be held and would end on February 27.
The nominations can be filed from February 10 and the last date for filing these is February 13. The nominations will be scrutinised on February 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 16.
According to Brar, a total of 28.5 lakh voters would be eligible to vote at 2,062 wards. He said EVMs were currently under inspection for being declared election-worthy. The DGP had been requested to ensure adequate security for the electoral process, he added.
On Friday, the commission announced that six municipal corporations -- Pathankot, Hoshiaprur, Phagwara, Moga, SAS Nagar and Bathinda -- would go to polls on February 22.
