The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday acquitted Ajayvir, a nephew and 'adopted son' of former Haryana director general of police (DGP) MS Malik, in a 2005 murder case. Ajayvir, a former state police officer, was convicted in 2009 by a Gurgaon court and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently lodged at a Gurgaon jail.

On Monday, the acquittal judgment was pronounced by a high court division bench headed by justice Ashutosh Mohunta. However, the detailed order was awaited.

As per the prosecution, Ajayvir had shot at a dhaba owner, Nand Kishore, dead with his service revolver on September 2, 2005, after a brawl at the dhaba.

After his conviction, Ajayvir approached the HC in 2010, praying that he had been framed at the behest of former Haryana DGP Nirmal Singh, who had a seniority dispute with Malik. He had also submitted that when the incident had taken place he was on casual leave and not in Gurgaon.

Another man named Praveen was also booked for the murder and also under the Arms Act. However, the trial court had acquitted him of murder charges.
